Pain Free

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could live life without pain? To someone us it would seem like it would be the perfect life, but is it what its really all what it’s cracked up to be? Congenital analgesia is the disorder of not being able to feel pain, I think a lot of athletes would love to have this disorder. They wouldn't feel any pain or miss any competitions. But is it healthy? With this disorder some are not able to feel pain but the body is still injured whether we feel it or not.

This picture is an example of a sport injury it is obvious that something is terribly wrong and he much seek medical attention immediately. What about the injuries that aren't visible to the naked eye?

Concussions are serious and cannot be seen, if we couldn't feel the impact of our brain hitting our skull we probably wouldn't be able to tell if someone has suffered from a concussion until the signs showed and it was too late because they stayed in the game receiving blow after blow to the brain leaving the person receiving the concussion with mental disorders. The fact that we would love to go through life pain free, pain can actually help us live even longer. Pain helps us stay away from danger or from doing certain things that may cause injury or death. So when you think about it would you still want to live your life pain free? With only one pro I can think of which is the loss of feeling actual pain sensations there are too many cons to go through life with the congenital analgesia disorder.

  1. I think that living pain-free is a really attractive offer… At first. But when you think about it more, it doesn't sound that great. Like you mentioned, concussions are really serious but how would you know to get checked out if you never felt the pain in your head? There are other examples like if you accidentally put your hand on the stove while cooking, you wouldn't feel the burn and would probably keep your hand there until someone pointed it out to you or you caught on fire! And I agree with what you said that pain keeps us away from danger! Fear of pain is probably a very good motivator to keep yourself safe. But someone who couldn't feel pain would probably not hesitate to do dangerous things that could potentially hurt or even kill them.

  2. I never have thought of people living in a world that is pain free. After seeing the videos from this week’s lecture think and reading your blog I think it is better for us to have the feeling of physical pain. Although many of us and including me do not want to suffer the effects of pain, it sure helps us to avoid dangerous situations. Sometimes getting hurt does teach us a lesson because you learn that if you expose yourself to that hazardous activity again then you can get hurt like the last time.

  3. What shocks me most about this is the brain activity shown in the picture. Can you imagine being fine one minute, and then your entire brain just sets on flame cause of the pain you're in? Like Priya says, it does seem like an attractive factor to not being ablet o feel pain...especially to me because i'm really accident/bruise prone...but I think it's important, very, very important to feel pain because each prick of pain a learning lesson. And what is life without a few splinters and scars?
